Notice to furnish information or documents

A notice under section 176 requires you to produce specified information, accounts or documents, and is often the first step before an audit or an amendment.

Income Tax Ordinance 2001
Time you have

The date stated on the notice, commonly 7 to 15 days.

If you ignore it

A penalty under section 182 applies for non-compliance, and the officer proceeds on the information he already has, which is usually the least favourable reading.

Why you got it

Why this arrived

  • The officer is verifying a figure in your return
  • Information about you was received from a bank, registrar or withholding agent
  • Your case has been selected for scrutiny and this is the opening step
What to do

What to do now

  1. Provide exactly what is asked for, no more and no less
  2. Where a document does not exist, say so in writing rather than staying silent
  3. Keep the submission on record through IRIS so compliance is documented
Documents

What to gather

  • The notice, which lists what is required
  • The specific records named in it
  • Your return and computation for the relevant year

Send us the notice before the deadline

Photograph every page and send it on WhatsApp. We read it the same day and tell you the real exposure, not the worst case. Our principal is a licensed Income Tax Practitioner and can be authorised on your IRIS account to reply and appear for you.
